Alright, so I'm a day late but as of yesterday, January 20th 2011, Barack Obama has been serving as the 44th President of the United States for two years. And to say that those two years were polarizing would be an understatement.
Now, I could spend the time in this article talking about the non-sense of the Teabaggers or the "Just Say No To Everything" mentality of the Republicans, but I must refrain from being blindly loyal. So, on this two year and one day anniversary, it's only proper to check in and see how well Obama has been sticking to his campaign pledges and to see how the Democrats who helped put him in office are holding up.
As of the 21st, according to the Wall Street Journal, the nation is in a bit better spirits with President Obama who is seeing an uptick in his polling numbers. As it stands right now, Obama's Job Approval rating is at 53% approve vs a 42% disapprove.
The Democrats, however, are not fairing as well as their leader. The former ruling party sees it's approval rating at 39% with 60% disapprove. This is by no means a celebration for the Republican Party, though. Even after the GOP's big win this past November the American people still only give the Republicans a 36% approval rating over a 61% disapproval which actually falls short of the Democrats who were just defeated.
It almost seems pointless to ask either party how they would grade the Obama Administration but, just for fun, we'll check them out.
Republican Party = The Obama Administration, according to the GOP, is completely out of touch with the American people. The Recovery Act put us deeper into foreign debt. Wall Street Reform is choking off innovation and business leading our country from a free market to a socialist state. The Middle Class Tax Cuts are ignored by the GOP. Credit Card Reform is government over reach just like the bailout of the auto industry. Clean energy is a war on Big Business. Healthcare Reform is killing jobs.
Democratic Party = Recovery Act brought us away from the brink and invested in the largest infrastructure program since Eisenhower while at the same time investing in education and saving as many as 3.7 million jobs. Wall Street Reform empowered the consumer, created a system of checks and balances for Wall Street, and ended taxpayer-funded bailouts for good. Middle Class Tax Cuts increased under President Obama while extending vital unemployment benefits. Credit Card Reform ended unfair credit card practices while protecting the consumer. Clean Energy technology is moving us towards a country which is no longer dependent on foreign oil. The Auto Industry bailout saved thousands of jobs while allowing the big three to rebuild and become more competitive. And Healthcare Reform now works for the better health of America while reducing the deficit and ending shadowy insurance industry practices.
According to the neutral site politifact.com's Obamameter, President Obama has thus far kept 134 promises, compromised on 41, broken 34, stalled on 74, has 221 in the works, and has yet to touch 2.
According to their top 25:
1. Create a foreclosure prevention fund - Compromised
2. Create a tax credit of $500 for workers - Compromised
3. Repeal the Bush tax cuts for higher income - Broken
4. Begin removing combat brigades from Iraq - Kept
5. Train and equip the Afghan army - In the Works
6. End the use of torture - In the Works
7. Close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center - Stalled
8. Restrict warrantless wiretaps - Stalled
9. Seek verifiable reductions in nuclear stockpiles - Kept
10. Centralize ethics and lobbying information for voters - Broken
11. Require more disclosure and a waiting period for earmarks - Compromised
12. Tougher rules against revolving door for lobbyists and former officials - Broken
13. Secure the borders - In the Works
14. Provide a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants - Stalled
15. Reform mandatory minimum sentences - Kept
16. Secure nuclear weapons materials in four years - In the Works
17. Strengthen antitrust enforcement - In the Works
18. Create new financial regulations - Kept
19. Sign a "universal" health care bill - Kept
20. Create 5 million "green" jobs - In the Works
21. Reduce oil consumption by 35% by 2030 - In the Works
22. Create cap and trade system with interim goals to reduce global warming - Broken
23. If you don't have insurance, or don't like the insurance you have, you'll be able to choose a new plan on a health insurance exchange - In the Works
24. Cut the cost of a typical family's health insurance premium by up to $2,500 a year - Stalled
25. Bring Democrats and Republicans together to pass an agenda - In the Works
Total:
Kept: 5
Compromised: 3
Broken: 4
Stalled: 4
In the Works: 9
Success Rate of Top 25: 5 out of 25 or 20%
PolitiFact.com has also begun a checklist for the new GOP House with a total of 57 goals to achieve within 2 years. In the short time since the House has been seated (2 weeks) the Republicans have already cut the budget for congress. 9 goals are in the works which are to make the Bush tax cuts permanent, repeal the healthcare bill, publish the text of bills online at least three days before a House vote, require bills to include a clause citing it's authority in the Constitution (political panders to the Teabaggers), develop standards for the type of legislation that will be brought to the floor, freeze government pay and government hiring, approve pending free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea, develop a 'cut as you go' rule, and webcast committee meetings. That leaves 47 other ideas on their agenda.
So the next two years leading up to the 2012 election should be interesting. With President Obama coming off a high from a very successful Congressional lame duck session and many from the GOP beginning to back off their $100 billion cut pledge, it looks as though both sides may try to move to the center in order to get things done. But the Tea Party and the Progressives aren't interested in compromise. They are in it for the win and Republicans desperately want to take back the White House so it's anyone's guess what the tone will be in a year.

First Photo For Deathly Hallows Part 2
Wow! If Warner Bros. was hoping to set the tone for the final film of the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, they did an epic job with this photo.
In this picture you see the normally soft spoken Neville Longbottom beaten, bloodied, bruised, and covered in...hmmm....birt (I ran out of b's. birt = dirt) and standing in what looks to be the ruins of Hogwarts. Many of the characters in the background are hard to make out but one character, even fuzzy, can easily be placed. To the left of Neville's shoulder is the woman responsible for the murder of his parents, Bellatrix Lestrange. Can't wait to see this flick this summer!
[Spoiler Alert]
Word has recently come out that the production crew had been granted permission by JK Rowling to change a major event in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This event is the death of Severus Snape. Don't worry, Snape still get's his, but it is where he dies that has changed. In the second half of the book, Voldemort has Nagini (his snake) bite the shit out of Snape thinking that Snape is the true master of the Elder Wand. This murder takes place in the Shrieking Shack and leads to an amazing part of the series where the entire history between Snape and Harry's mother is revealed.
Well the production team felt the the Shrieking Shack was too boxed in for such an amazing ending for an epic character so a new location was created just for Part 2. The location is called the Crystal House and is apparently situated so that Harry can look into the building to see Nagini's attack and the house can also overlook the burning of Hogwarts.
According to members of the cast and crew, there wasn't a dry eye in the house during the filming of the death of Snape.

First Look
Many bitch and grumble like old geezers that Hollywood no longer has any original ideas. Personally, for me, this is a positive. I don't know how many World War II or gay cowboys eating pudding flicks I can sit through. This supposed lack of imagination has also brought about a renaissance in comic book movies that has been going strong for around a decade now. So I say to Hollywood, keep ripping off the comic book community!
So in celebration of the comic book dominance of Hollywood here are first looks at the up and coming Captain America: The First Avenger, Spiderman Reboot, and X-Men: First Class.
So in celebration of the comic book dominance of Hollywood here are first looks at the up and coming Captain America: The First Avenger, Spiderman Reboot, and X-Men: First Class.
Captain America: The First Avenger
I was never really the biggest Captain America fan. The whole idea of Cap seemed a bit forced and desperate on Marvels part to seem relevant during WWII when DC was dominating. However, I did start to fall in love with the character during the epic Civil War series when Captain America turned away from the security of S.H.E.I.L.D., went toe to toe against Iron Man, all to appose what he felt was an unjust law. Will this get me in the theater to see the film? 50/50. I have been a fan of Chris Evans since his starring role in Not Another Teen Movie and, let's face it, he was the best actor in the Fantastic Four. But I'm a tad baffled at the linebacker look that they turned Captain America into. Granted, it's a lot better then the original design but I'd expect to see him more as a mascot for the New England Patriots then on the battlefield. Another plus for the film is Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, V For Vendetta, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Transformers) playing the nemesis Red Skull. My biggest question for this series is, how is Marvel Entertainment planning on getting Captain America, the World War II soldier, to the present to become apart of The Avengers? Time travel? If so, then I'm calling it now: Time travel is what will kill The Avengers series.
Spiderman Reboot
The best thing to come out of the Spiderman franchise was comic book artist Todd McFarlane who went off to create a real hero in Spawn. With that said though, Spiderman is a classic and when you are an awkward, voice crackling teen that doesn't know what is going on with your own body you tend to relate to Spiderman. He wasn't the only one randomly shooting white stuff everywhere, am I right? HA! So it was a shame to see the webslinger get reduced to such a pathetic over-Hollywooded franchise like the old series. For Christ sake, they had the dude turn emo when he got the Venom Symbiote. I know that got all the little girls hot and heavy but every fanboy on the planet attended a Spidey book burning that evening. So when Marvel announced that Spiderman would be rebooted it peeked my interest and the fact that they are risking using a still relative unknown like Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) to portray Peter Parker it shows that Marvel and Disney are taking loyalty to the series seriously.
All that is really known about this flick is that the movie will take place between the time that Peter gets his powers but before he goes off to work freelance for J. Jonah Jameson. So no over testosteroned fast talking in this flick. And hey, if nothing else, at least you'll have Emma Stone to stare at.
P.S. Martin Sheen is set to play Peter's uncle Ben. Not quite sure yet how I feel about that. I'm just going to be thinking about President Bartlet from the West Wing the entire time.
X-Men: First Class
I'm a bit confused about X-Men: First Class and that confusion comes from the casting of January Jones to play Emma Frost. Now, I'm not complaining, it's just that her age does not fit in with the timeline. If you recall, at the end of Wolverine all the mutants which had been experimented on by the government escape and are saved by a really bad CGI rendition of Patrick Stewart's Professor Xavier. Besides having the ability to walk, Professor X looked pretty much the same as he always had. One of the mutants which he saved was a young girl named Emma Frost. So how is it that, in this spin off, Emma Frost is not only no longer a little girl, but looks to be around the same age as a very well quaffed Charles Xavier? Perhaps it's simple shit but discrepancies and poor planning is what kills franchises.
In conclusion, I'm sure all these films will do very well and will produce at least one more sequel before Marvel and Disney reboot them again.
P.S. I hate Thor.

Glenn Beck Attacks Philly
With the amount of shit which flows out of Glenn Beck's mouth it would be forgivable for anyone to mistake him for a backed up toilet. But usually Cry Baby Beck only spews his filth at politicians and, occasionally, locations such as Manhattan and California. After all, if you are a mindless conservative it's in the hand book that you have to hate California. It's not like Reagan came from there or anything. But recently, the beaty eyed bastard who regularly has wet dreams about being the next George Washington, set his sites on the cradle of independence in this country.
In retaliation for getting dropped from the airwaves of Philly, Beck claimed that Philly sucked and that the area around Independence Hall are "killing streets".
The oh so clever Mayor Nutter lashed back at Beck saying that he suffered from "verb-arrhea".
As with most of Becks comments, his observation about the area in question are twisted and misinformed. The reality is that the historic area around Independence Hall is actually one of the safest areas of the city if not the entire country. But what can you say, the Captain of Conspiracy is seeing his ratings drop and his advertisers drop with them. Being a little bitch is his last ditch effort to grab some more headlines before he becomes yet another media mistake of the past. So this song is dedicated to the lunatic who will no longer be poisoning the airwaves of Philadelphia.

Season Of The Witch For True Blood
Currently Netflix is helping me try and understand the True Blood mania which most of my friends have been infected with. My lack of interest in the show stems mainly from the over saturation of vampires in movies and television. One thing I will give True Blood is that there are no boundaries. I don't just mean in it's graphic nature (which there is a lot of). I also mean in the creative teams willingness to explore other mythical genres. Thus far there have been vampires, gods and goddesses, shape shifters, and pixies. Well the teaser trailer for the upcoming season of True Blood seems to lead the show into yet another mythical genre. And this won't be Harry Potter witches either. Or, if it is, it's Harry Potter witches in the after hours. Someone needs to make that movie.

Cbot Has Gone To The Birds
That's right folks, Cbot is now on twitter. Why? Not quite sure to be honest with you. Shameless self-promotion comes to mind. After all, if 50 Cent can make 8 million on the goddamn thing in 1 day maybe I can make 8 dollars on it in 1 year. New Years Resolution: If by January 13th, 2011 I don't make at least $8 bucks on twitter then I'll quit it and mock it until my throat breaks......or at least gets very sore.
So if you are interested follow me @longlivecbot. I already have 8 followers but I'm sure they are gonna try to sell me porn.
